Community Service at Shade!

I would like to tell all of you reading just one of the many things The Challenge Program can do for you.  Winning the $250 award for community service could be as easy as simply helping out in your community.  If you are trying to find some different ways to get in your hours, I could help you!  Helping out at church events is one of the easiest ways to get your hours.  If you are involved in Student Council in your school, you may have special days put out for veterans or children of your community.  Surprisingly, you could have a great time serving a veteran breakfast, and possible get three hours of service in.  I think we owe it back to our communities to help them out, and to be commended for our work makes it so much better.

I, personally, have won the community service award and it is a great honor.  I chose to put the money I won towards one of my college classes in school.  There really is no say in what you could put that money towards.  One of the other main reasons I am writing is because I feel not a lot of people know about this contest.  When I entered, there were not many from my school willing to participate with me.  In conclusion, I would like to express how important this award is, and wish all of you luck in racking up the service hours!

Happy Holidays from TCP students at Conemaugh Township High School!

The Holidays are just around the corner and The Challenge Program wants to wish you and your loved ones a safe and happy holiday and New Year. Also, remember that Santa isn’t the only one around here giving out the gifts. TCP will be handing out their grand presents to all participating schools at the end of the year. If you’re a 10th, 11th, or 12th grade student, you could very easily be unwrapping a $250 check in just a few months!

The holiday season is a great time to lend a helping hand. Plenty of people need help putting up and taking down decorations, shoveling, serving food at the shelters, and a variety of other wintry tasks. There are many opportunities available. Just make sure to get the Community Service form from your guidance counselor and log your hours so that you can win the CS award.

Quite a few blizzards accompanied with numbing cold temperatures have already thrown off the lessons plans at many schools due to cancellations and delays. But it’s important that when we are in school that we work hard in applying our knowledge and continue to improve. It may be hard to focus during this exciting season, but keep the end reward in mind, not just the check for Academic Excellence and Academic Attendance, but the motivation and tools you have learned that will stay with you for the rest of your life. It’s also important to make sure that when school is in session, that you are there. Think of it like this: you won’t win that snowball fight if you’re not even there to build your fort. So bundle up and try to keep healthy during this season so that you can make it everyday and win the Best Attendance award.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE CHALLENGE PROGRAM INC.!

Richland Post 1

The Challenge Program is a way to reach out to and encourage students to be more active in their communities.  At Richland, we try to get as many students involved as possible.  As student  advisers, we attempt to show leadership in every class and set an example for the underclassmen.  All three of us are elected members of the executive board which is a huge accomplishment because only a few are selected to be apart of it. Just to name a few other clubs we participate in include: key club, SADD, student council, and drug free coalition. The Challenge Program influences us to take leadership in the other clubs. We see the effect of good leadership in the Challenge Program and we have been trying to reflect that value in other programs.

TCP

Hello Everyone!

My name is Cody Kiser, and I have recently been appointed as an ambassador for The Challenge Program. It is a great honor to receive such a responsibillity. I am a big contributer throughout my community, and my school district. I am a member of not only the challenge program, but a member of the student council. I work through the PASC, which is the Pennsylvania Association of Student Councils, and I represent district 6 of our state, as a region representative. I am also involved in NHS, Varsity Club, Yearbook, and much more. The Challenge Program has helped me through Student Council, and it has highly motivated me to strive for being the best student that I can be.

My partner that is contributing with me through The Challenge Program is Emily Harkcom. She also takes part in our Student Council, and Student Congress, as well as yearbook staff. Emily has recently won a community service award, from The Challenge Program by leading her church with activities such as serving dinners, and mass. She also volunteers at our local hospitals. Together as a team, we will strive to make our school a better place for both education and community service.

Any suggestions for fundraisers to help our school would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Dropout Crisis

There is a tremendous need for a motivational incentive program in our nation’s public high school system.  According to a 2007 report from Editorial Projects in Education, approximately one-third of all students drop out of high school. During one school day, 7,000 students drop out—that calculates to one student every 26 seconds. An additional third of high school students are not college or workforce ready when they graduate.

The unpreparedness of our nation’s high school students will have an enormous social and economic impact.  The high school students of today will find themselves unable to compete in an increasingly global workforce because they will not possess the required knowledge and skills to adapt to a work environment where technologies and job expectations are constantly changing.  The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) determined that simply cutting the drop-out rate in half would create $45 billion for the federal government in cost savings or increased tax revenues.

What do you think about this crisis?  How can we help make an impact? Comment below!
